Two very different portraits!

Things have been crazy here lately, and not in a good way, but I’m not here to talk about that.

In between the shitstorms I’ve created two very different portraits, both in response to a themed challenge on Sktchy.

The first theme was “space” and we were randomly assigned a muse. From the pictures my muse had posted, I was drawn to one of him with a shaving cut (which is weird for me, as I’m not into blood/gore/violence), but it suggested a story to me. So by looking at several of his photos, and also his Instagram, here’s what I ended up with. I’ll leave it to you to imagine the story;

Dustin, pen and watercolour on paper, 6×4″

For the second challenge, the theme was “blue” and this time we were allowed to select our own muse. I chose one that was strongly front-lit with one of those ring lights – normally I wouldn’t because they flatten out form, but I was really taken with what the light did to the veil/scarf she’s wearing, and also the highlights in her eyes. Here’s the end result;

Jenell, watercolour on paper, A4

Both paintings are watercolour on paper – the blue one is in fact nothing but multiple layers of phthalo blue! But other than that they could not be more different.

Do you prefer one to the other? Let me know in the comments below!
