Because I was starting to feel a little stale with painting, I’m broadening my artistic horizons by adding a third dimension!
In the last few months I’ve looked at a lot of things people are making with clay, and got very inspired to try it myself. After much research I decided that polymer clay would best suit how I think and work. So I bought some clay, and my wife gave me an early Christmas present of some tools, and I just dived in to see what would happen!
I decided to make a book, but being a lifelong fan of fantasy it quickly turned into a grimoire rather than just any old book. I modelled it in several stages but baked it all at once, and then painted it with acrylics. Making the worn leather texture was fun, and although it’s not very clear from the photographs, the reinforcements on the book corners, and the locking clasp, are painted with metallic gold that shines in the light.
I’m really pleased with how this turned out – it’s only about the size of a matchbox – and I’m really looking forward to doing more!
